Supplies

Here’s a list of supplies I used to demonstrate the techniques in this course. I recommend watching the lessons before buying anything new — you’ll often find that what’s already in your stash can be used as a substitute. You can also ask questions about supplies under each lesson, and I, along with the Team, will be there to offer suggestions and ideas.

Brushes
Various sizes — I mostly use round brushes, with a few flat and fan brushes mixed in.

Paints

  • Acrylics: Golden Heavy Body and Amsterdam Talens are my favourites, but any good-quality brand will do. Avoid school-grade paints.
  • Watercolours: Daniel Smith and Sennelier are my go-tos, though any artist-grade pans or tubes work beautifully.

Drawing & Mark-Making Tools
Graphite pencil or stick, peel & sketch charcoal, willow charcoal, paper stump, sanding paper, tracing paper (optional), tracing stylus (optional), fine-tip black pen (e.g. Pigma Micron), white Posca pen, silicone brush, skewer.
Soft dry pastels (various colours, my favourite brand is Unison but less expensive alternatives are available - read more about my pastels here), pastel pencil (black or brown), fluid inks or liquid watercolours (I use Bombay Ink Yellow Ochre and Aqua, Hydrus Turquoise)

Surfaces & Grounds
Sketchbook or heavy paper pad (min. 100gsm, I use A4), white gesso, clear gesso, plaster of paris or casting powder, Scotch blue painter’s tape.

Palettes & Tools
Colour mixing palette (anything from a paper plate to an Ikea Billy glass shelf, butcher tray or peel-off palette), palette knife.

Collage & Others
Neutral collage papers (ledger paper, old book pages, wrapping/scrapbooking paper, washi tape), PVA glue and an old credit card to spread it, spray fixative.
